It is the Hungarian government’s aim to guide Slovakia back to the correct path, to sober and normal solutions regarding the state language law, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Balazs said on Tuesday.
Balazs said the Slovak language law is planned to come into effect on September 1 and it will then show how it functions, whether its regulations are applied with full force, in a harsh and malicious way.
It would be in Hungary’s interest if neighbouring Slovakia, an ally in the European Union and NATO, would return to the correct path, Balazs said. This can only be encouraged by way of criticism and moral pressure, he added.
In his assessment of the past 100 days of the ministry’s work, Balazs said Hungary’s new government led by Gordon Bajnai has also set new objectives, such as improved communication of crisis management abroad, recovery of lost confidence in the economy and the government, and developing ways of economic expansion.
It seems that hungarian government has started to adopt a vocabulary of extreme hungarian parties. The first and the last path Hungary should follow is to find a way out of that ditch where Hungarian economy found itself.
A bogey that hungarian representatives created in the past few weeks from a standard language law to cover a scandal exhibition of hungarian neonazis sent to eu parliament would be more efficient if one would actually bother to read what disputed law contain first.
Because if someone is screaming that a law is descructive, disriminating, belonging to the 18th century and I don’t know what else, he may find himself in a ridiculous position if, afterwards, the high commissioner on national minorities testifies that the law is in line with international standards and pursuing a legitimate goal.
