Hungary will turn to the UN's Human Rights Council and the European Council to complain about Slovakia's language law, Foreign Minister Peter Balazs told MTI on Monday, after talks with the president and the head of Parliament's foreign affairs committee.
President Laszlo Solyom criticised the recently adopted new law, which criminalises the public use of the Hungarian language.
"Turning a multi-national country into a homogeneous nation state, a forced assimilation, are incompatible with the European Union's values and goes against international laws protecting minorities," a statement from the President's Office said.
At the talks, Solyom welcomed the fact that there was agreement between Hungary's political parties and churches on this issue, which is not only a legal violation but also against the interests of both Slovak and Hungarian people, the statement added.
Head of parliament's foreign committee Zsolt Nemeth, of the main opposition Fidesz party, told reporters after the meeting that a delegation of Hungary's parliament would visit key European cities such as Brussels and the Hague in September, to hold talks focusing on the issue.
It is important that Hungarian dignitaries represent a consistent position against the Slovak law, Nemeth added.
Foreign Minister Peter Balazs told a press conference after meeting Solyom that the ministry planned to monitor the law's effects in practice. Any complaints from minority members or organisations will be followed up and taken up with the relevant authorities, Balazs said.
In response to opposition Democratic Forum's proposal that Hungary should take over any fines that members of the Hungarian community in Slovakia get for using their mother tongue, Balazs said the idea was admirable but there were no such funds available.
He added that the ratification of the EU's Lisbon Treaty would be an important step in connection with the issue, as the treaty's charter of fundamental rights prohibits discrimination.
Under the law, which is set to take effect on September 1, the use of a minority language in official communication would be punishable -- in certain instances by a fine of up to 5,000 euros -- in towns and villages where the ethnic minority makes up less than 20 percent of the total population.

Here we have a problem for the 'Nationalists' who of course are against the EU's Lisbon Treaty to think about:
"the ratification of the EU's Lisbon Treaty would be an important step in connection with the issue, as the treaty's charter of fundamental rights prohibits discrimination"

Another example of these terrible multi-cultural foreigners is of course Hungarian President Solyom stated:
"Turning a multi-national country into a homogeneous nation state, a forced assimilation, are incompatible with the European Union's values and goes against international laws protecting minorities"
How was it now the song is normally sung among the 'Nationalists' on this site:
'Throw out the Jews and Gypsies!'
===
In Slovakia they are doing what you want to do, but with others.
Maybe 'Nationalism' is not such a Great Idea, when it comes back to bite you.
It is reprehensible of politicians to be more concerned with matters outside of Hungary rather
than trying to resolve the almighty mess within its own borders.
Nationalists! What are they trying to prove?
Ten million Hungarians in a small area. Two million gypsies, (more flooding in by the day), three million pensioiners and at least one million unemployed. Corruption everywhere and hopeless politicians and administrators who, in lieu of anything better to do, try and rebuild a lost empire
ceded under the Trianon Treaty. Dream on and drag this country deeper and ever deeper into the dark abyss of starving people roaming the streets asking for money - you crazy diamonds!!
Hungary was never an empire by its own and never will be . the Austrian had with you and by your self you are what you are today and that is not much , unsmiling people who are bitter and frustrated about there situation blaming all the world ( Slovak , Romanian Jews , Roma , Russian , and foreign in general ) in your problems and will do anything but actually going to work.
Corruption here has topped south America countries and is closer to Africa nation. But with all that it became a fashion here to be anti USA and Nationalist. Now you feel the other side
What I am starting to say is stop dreaming about the old Empire ( that was never so great and was more Austrian then Hungarian ) and start dreaming about a normal country with less hate and more heart
haromani,
You don't have a clue of what you're rambling about my dear. Check your spelling first, then yourself into a mental institution ASAP. Then should therapy succeed, delve yourself into some history before you participate in issues way beyond your narrow-minded capacity.
@LentiTibor,
Now close the fridge, finish your last drink and read out loud your last comment for your own comprehension.
All the correct arguments you mobilized in support of it are the historically evident result of the Trianon treaty, except you haven't managed to take the time to review them carefully.
Read the script of the Trianon treaty, look into who benefited materially, financially and morally.
You'll find the answer, don't worry, especially one gifted with your intellect.
F*ckwit Viking, the meathead, can’t even stay on-subject, his enthusiasm to spew hatred of Hungarians so overwhelms him. The dirty little runt (“Viking”! ha!ha!ha!) is on the job 24/7, and is paid by this salubrious outfit: http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=34520. (He’s a queer, too.)
If with this absurd international exhibition hungarian government intends to veil the rage of hungarian extremism they made a very bad choice. Hungary has already got the response from a commissioner of OCSE, going with the issue to UN is mostly childish move. But as Hungary wishes. I suppose that if UN rejects Hungary's complaint, Hungary is ready to turn with their complaints to the intergalactic council also.
@vdx
Buddy, you wouldn't know galaxy from childish move. You wouldn't know intergalactic from the UN.
Put a lid on it please and go back to the Negev desert for a tan. It may supply you with some vital vitamin D. Once absorbed, please return with the best of your abilities thank you very much.
I doubt it though.
The unfortunate fact is that this current dictatorial act by Slovakia is not the first and will never be the last. The chip lies firmly on their shoulders, after all, if Hungary were to successfully claim back the stolen lands, Slovakia would end up the size of Budapest 6th district!
It is not by chance that the Czech's broke away from these idiots as quickly as they could!
They are the dregs of Europe...
after you beju, only after you..
vdx,
Listen buddy. Tell your Mossad controllers to select someone competent next time, because with your current performance you wouldn't last three minutes in any other "company". Seriously.
You may need another ... probably 2 years of preparation, evaluation and graduation to debate in a forum like this. Hey, that's not long is it?
In the meantime polish up your English 'cause it sucks.
John,
Indeed. The Slovaks know that they stole someone else's property and desperately try to hang onto it. They are well aware that history will haunt them forever and it will return back to its original owner sooner or later. Same with Romania.
Their best ally has a;ways been a jewish/bolshevik administration in Hungary.
Fortunately not for long.
and go with your paranoia to that psychiatrist. If he can't help you then nobody can.
vdx,
Now this was totally uncalled for. Are you a racist?
Do you know such comments hurt me bad?
In fact my earlier grievances bubble up like a torrential flood. I can't gasp for air right now..
In fact if you knew my grandad died in Auschwitz, you wouldn't be so innuendo and drastic.
You hurt me. Every atomic element in my body aches for redemption by your inconsiderate comment.
He died falling out drunk of a guardtower.
Terrible disaster.
