MSZP chair downplays party’s plunging popularity

“We made a good decision in the country’s interests and, I hope, also in those of the party,” Socialist Party chairwoman Ildikó Lendvai told Inforádió on Monday in answer to a question about her party’s significant drop in popularity since electing Gordon Bajnai as an interim prime minister 100 days ago.

“The budget will be of a left-wing nature, with safety and stability as its watchwords,” Lendvai added.

According to Magyar Hírlap, Secret Services Minister Ádám Ficsor, Defence Minister Imre Szekeres and Social Affairs Minister Péter Kiss will all leave the cabinet once the budget has been passed. Government spokeswoman Bernadett Budai said the Socialists have not told the premier which ministers will leave the cabinet, the daily adds.

Lendvai said her party does not support the convening of a special House session over the Kisléta murder, “as there is no room for party political battles”, but backed the convening of a parliamentary committee meeting.
