Budapest City Council battles over scandal at public transport firm

The Socialist members of Budapest city council will initiate the dismissal of BKV CEO István Kocsis because of the state of affairs prevailing at the public transport company, the scandalously large severance payments there, and the loss of confidence in Kocsis.

Pál Steiner, head of the Budapest group on city council and party chapter leader Sándor Burány made their intentions known at a Thursday press conference.

In response, deputy mayor Imre Ikvai-Szabó, a Free Democrat, said the Socialists should submit a professionally well-founded written proposal on removing Kocsis, as the question cannot be dealt with without a written proposal.

Steiner told Magyar Nemzet that the Free Democrats are party to what happened, as Ikvai-Szabó, who oversees finances, and deputy mayor Miklós Hagyó are responsible for matters related to city-owned companies.

City council’s finance committee could decide to fire Kocsis. The committee has five Socialist members, two Free Democrats, four Fidesz-Christian Democrat members and one from the Democratic Forum.

István Tarlós, head of the Fidesz group on city council, said his party does not support the dismissal of Kocsis, as it believes that more than one person is responsible for the situation at the BKV. He called for an inquest into goings-on at the BKV since 2006, adding that some responsibility definitely lies with Hagyó, who oversees the company.

Kocsis said in an interview with the weekly 168 Óra that the case of the former personnel director who left the company with nearly Ft 100 million in severance pay had been concealed from him. “If I had known this last September, I would obviously have acted,” he said, adding that he had inherited the policy on severance payments from his predecessors. He said wars of interest are being waged behind his back but he does not want to wage a war.

    What a bunch of sediment. One’s no different than the next when it comes to chicanery and thievery from the public coffers. The original sin still lies with demszky gabor, who could have only stayed in office for 20 years in Budapest while stealing everyone’s eyes out with the support and manipulation of Budapest szdsz jews. The communists are just sidekicks, accomplices for grand theft to this day.

    If some one has managed to get elected 5 times in a row in confirmed open and democratic elections can obviously not be that bad. Sounds more like bad excuses for the bad losers, that has still and probably never, been able to oust him out of office.
    The term ‘never’ can probably be used, then he has stated he will not run for re-election any more.

    Having the same group at power for 20 years is probably not a Good Thing(tm) and most likely there will be a change one year later. Question if that is due to the opposition is good or the guys at power has become more and ore out of touch is a good question though.

    These problems that occurs in public owned companies just show that there is no reason to keep them in public ownership, sell a license for expensive money to operate the public transports, like London and Stockholm, and you will loose these politicians turned bad businessmen.
    The problem with the Kadar Communists in Fidesz, Jobbik and MSZP, is that they do not want that, so we probably will have to live with these scandals for another 20 years.

    Get some decent transport arranged from Ferihegy/Budapest to lake Balaton. Tourists are badly needed for the ailing businesses down there?!
    Enclosed a recent article from the Times Online:

    I was interested in your article on Lake Balaton and would agree with the general sentiments – delightfully dated, I would describe the area. I would add that there are other attractions, as I have recently returned from a town called Heviz at the north western end of the lake for dental treatment (crowns and a bridge) and was delighted with the service and quality provided by a firm called Hodent. I believe Hungary is renowned as being the dental capital of Europe and I was also able to enjoy the spa facilities in the town, an odd combination I know but both at a fraction of the price back home.

    Yes. And it explains perfectly why every second person has intermittent and random teeth configurations. Especially in the countryside. Dental care is so cheap, that only Germans, Americans, Dutchmen and Austrians can afford it.

    That’s why I love these well-versed correspondents, they travel, see and report unbiased.

    Now read this sentence back to yourself.
    Now read it again.
    You don’t see the problem I fathom yet pose it
    what’s wrong with this picture? Not your picture, we all know about that one but Demszky Gabor’s picture?
    Did fraud actually enter into your discriminative, democratic view?
    Man you need some urgent and surgical help.

    beju, of course if you share Erik’s view that all politicians by birth are frauds and cheaters.
    But then, what does that make politicians from MIEP (like yourself) and Jobbik then?

  7. beju says:

    @viking,
    If this last thread was a pointed question, I can whole-heartedly reply by saying,
    MIEP or Jobbik have never been in power. No corruption cases emerged in the scale of every one of the ruling parties’ representatives in their midst. Consequently you have no way of knowing what they’d do in power. Have you ever heard of the term, the benefit of the doubt? You only give way to your fears induced by the establishment to steer you from giving them a try. What have you got to lose?
    I mean really.
    If they steal to the extent the current ones afforded themselves, then you may have an argument to kick them out. But you don’t even give them the chance. Very democratic indeed.

    @Viking,
    Sorry for the next cube, politicians by definition are whores. They sell their souls to the highest bidder. The ones who refuse doing so do not make it as politicians. Erik is not one of my favorites around here because of his anti-Hungarian sentiments, so please don’t compare me to him.
    It doesn’t mean though that there is no honesty in politics. The “Hungarian ones” will try to sell you that bullcrap, but before the galiciean jews in the 19th century settled in the Carpathian basin with the blessing of the crown, the country was doing fine thank you very much.
    Since their occupation aristocracy, nobility, the middle class and the proletariat would sell their mothers for a cent.
    Hungary’s detriment and unfortunate peril originate from her kid glove treatment of the jews.
