As in much of the world, Hungary is going through an inevitably awkward process of coming to terms with the fact that a certain number of its politicians and high-ranking officials are gay or lesbian. While in most such cases the second or third such “outing” mostly serves to show how normal these folks are, Hungary’s latest might not. According to Gábor Szetey, in the person of László Sebián-Petrovszki (top), who runs the “operative affairs” of the cabinet office. But what makes Sebián-Petrovszki’s case unlikely to dull existing stereotypes is what led him to out himself: The listing of a popular entertainer – Bertalan Sugár (bottom) – as his partner on the asset declaration form officials like Sebián-Petrovszki need to fill out. Meanwhile, the incident again confirms that the world of politics is still years behind the entertainment business when it comes to openness about gender issues; Sugár came out way back in 2004.

The Budapest police (BRFK) “has acknowledged” the Hungarian gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community’s Gay Dignity March across the central districts of the city set for Saturday, BRFK announced on Monday. “Each citizen has the right to express or demonstrate their opinion, even if it is different from the views of others,” BRFK said in a statement.
