Hungarian politicians less popular than ever

Hungary’s politicians scored an average 29 points out of 100 in a recent Szonda Ipsos popularity poll, the daily Nepszabadsag said on Monday.

Only President Laszlo Solyom and Viktor Orban, leader of the main opposition Fidesz party, were close to the 50 point mark, above which is a positive rating, the paper said.

Even core voters failed to reward their favourite politicians with more than 60 points. Undecided voters gave each politician between 25-30 points, the report said.

Solyom (49) and Orban (45) were followed by House Speaker Katalin Szili (37), Fidesz parliamentary leader Tibor Navracsics (37), Agriculture Minister Jozsef Graf (33), and Gabor Vona, leader of the radical nationalist Jobbik party (32).

The most unpopular politicians were Janos Koka, the liberal Free Democrats’ parliamentary leader (18), former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany (19) and Justice Minister Tibor Draskovics (20).

Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai scored 26 points.

The poll was conducted between August 3-9 with a representative sample of 1,500 voting-age adults.
