Foreign Minister Péter Balász agreed with his Slovak counterpart Miroslav Lajcák on Sunday to set up a meeting between Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai and Slovak premier Robert Fico, and formulated proposals to resolve the current problems between the two countries.
Bajnai said on Friday that “it is in the interests of all the citizens of the two countries to see an easing of the tensions caused by the amended Slovak language act and the unacceptable ban of President László Sólyom’s visit to Slovakia on August 21, which runs counter to basic European norms.”
Fico later countered that Slovakia cannot make any concessions regarding the thwarted visit to Komárno of President László Sólyom, nor on the Slovak language act.
UK newspaper The Economist wrote on Friday that Slovakia had breached EU regulations on freedom of movement when it blocked Sólyom’s attempt to cross the border.
