Hospital financing set for rethink

Hungary’s current system of financing the operation of hospitals contains “dysfunctional elements” which need to be changed, Health Minister Tamas Szekely said on Thursday.

Szekely added, however, that directions for the actual changes had not been defined as yet.

On Wednesday, the main opposition Fidesz party voiced criticism of the current system, and called for its reform targeting more stable operations.

“The time has come to give up performance financing and abandon manipulations with performance figures to get increased funding,” Fidesz MP Istvan Mikola said. Hospitals must be assured predictable financing, he added.
