Instead of a conspiracy of silence in the case of an MP who claimed Roma women deliberately harmed their unborn children in order to receive higher state benefits, the leadership of main opposition Fidesz should take steps which are conversant with democracy, the spokesman of the conservative Democratic Forum (MDF) said on Wednesday.
Fidesz clearly does not know what to do with Oszkar Molnar, one if its MPs and local mayor, Szabolcs Kerek-Barczy said in a statement.
A group of 400-500 Roma demonstrated earlier in the week to demand the resignation of mayor of Edeleny, NE Hungary, over his recent statements about Roma women.
Molnar last Thursday told a commercial TV channel news programme that pregnant Roma women deliberately harmed their unborn offspring in order to get extra family benefits.
Responding to the demonstration, a Fidesz spokesman said that the party considered the case to be a local affair.
The MDF statement said that if the Fidesz leadership followed "basic moral and democratic norms" then they would have taken "the appropriate steps" days ago.

Reading this article, I can understand why nobody has commented on it as of yet. Why is that I wonder?
Is it because this is beyond what any rational human being could possibly do/imagine?
Is it because there maybe some truth to what this man is saying? Now really, why would Molnar make this up knowing that it would be political suicide?
Is it possible that there are people of any nationality/faith, that are so evil/sick, that would consider this, a possible area to exploit?
Think of it, does it not just send shivers up your spine to think that people would actually consider this as an option?
justasking,
" I can understand why nobody has commented on it as of yet"
The article interests me, but I didn't comment on it because I didn't know what "deliberately harmed their unborn offspring in order to get extra family benefits." meant, some more information would be useful.
Smoking and drinking during pregnancy have been linked to harming the offspring, is this all that was meant or something more sinister? When my wife was expecting our first child, one gypsy mother defended her smoking by saying she expected her child to have a lower bithweight and hence she would have easier delivery. However I don't see how that this kind of harm would lead to more benefits later in life, for that you would have to disable the child. I'm no doctor, but I would expect anything that could permenantly disable a child in the womb would also significantly increase the risk of miscarriage, and so would be very dangerous for the mother as well.
A less risky course would be in line with the scene reported by a US peace corp volunteer working with gypsies in Romania. I read this some years ago in a thread about Isobel Fonseca's "Bury me standing" so I don't know if it is authentic or not. The volunteer wrote that she had entered a house just after the parents had deliberately broken the arm of their 3 year old daughter, they refused to take the child to hospital because they wanted to her to grow up disfugured: this would help her to beg.
@ Sophist;
I have no idea what a woman would have to do to harm an unborn child nor do I even what to know.
But I do not think that it would take a rocket scientist to figure out that "harming" is more than just smoking during pregnancy. Low birth rate is just that, smaller coming out, besides it is an old wivestale. I know this, for both my kids were 8.5 lbs and 20 inches at birth, and yes I smoked...not lots, but smoked none the less.
Harming an child for what ever reason and in what ever capacity, is in my opinion, should be punishable by death.
Yes to all you parents out there, somedays I want to throw myself out the window...and other days I want to throw THEM out the window.
That being said, I choose for them to be here, they had no say in the matter. Thats why I there is nothing I would not do for them for they are MY RESPONSIBILITY and I accept that... most days with pleasure.
@Justasking
Welcome back buddy! Nice to see you back in form, making the discussion worthwhile reading.
I been low key working my ring off.
Apparently FIDESZ is far too neutral to stand up to the hottest issues concerning the nation and it's people, if FIDESZ had any backbone they would suggest an inquiry into these incidents, this is where Jobbik take the clear lead, their not scared to speak out at the most controversial topics affecting Hungarians. As you mention who in their right mind would raise such allegations? especially one if its MPs and local mayor Oszkar Molnar, if there was no evidence to back it up, it’s political suicide. So where there’s smoke !
