It was inevitable that Budapest’s Socialists would hit back against Fidesz after several of its local government officials have become embroiled in high-profile embezzlement scandals. According to MSZP, Budapest’s District XVII, led by opposition party Fidesz, lost nearly Ft 100 million (€370,000) as a result of bad financial management. According to index.hu, the local government merged two of its companies in an inefficient way three years ago. MSZP MP Zoltán Szabó said there was suspicion that the public funds got into unauthorized hands and police are investigating the case. Fidesz responded by quoting articles by journalists and politicians about corruption in MSZP. In other words, political business as usual.
