All parliamentary parties of Hungary rule out cooperation with the radical nationalist Jobbik, which is a non-parliamentary party, Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday.
Giving an informal briefing in the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), the president said there existed radical right-wing movements in Hungary, and a radical right-wing party, Jobbik, had even won seats in the European Parliament.
“Jobbik has canvassed votes by inciting sentiments against the Roma minority, and made a skilful use of the media. As part of this effort, it launched the Hungarian Guard movement, which generated fear in the Roma minority. Besides lashing up sentiments, however, the Hungarian extreme right has failed to come forward with any programme,” he said.
Solyom said he was aware that over the past few years Hungary had appeared in the international media mostly with negative news. Most recently a serial killing targeting Roma people tarnished the country’s reputation abroad, he said, adding that the suspects had been arrested and would be brought to court.
Solyom admitted that the images showing street riots and marches by radical right-wing organisations had also harmed Hungary’s reputation. Nevertheless, he expressed the conviction that democracy is not less stable and its institutions are not less viable in Hungary than in Germany or France. He stressed that the extremists are rejected by the overwhelming majority of Hungarians.
Asked about Hungarian-Slovak relations, Solyom qualified the adoption of Slovakia’s state language act as an unnecessary step that hit the Hungarian minority. The president emphasised that his recent denial of entry to Slovakia went against the values of the European Union.
Solyom expects prime ministers Gordon Bajnai of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia to make some progress towards easing tension at their meeting on Thursday.
The president said he would also make every possible effort to ease tension but he would not meet his Slovak counterpart as long as Slovakia fails to clarify why it prevented his visit to Komarno on August 21.

Well the Hungarian President is elected by the Parliament and Jobbik is not part of the Hungarian Parliament, so there is no non-partisan issue here.

Solyom did the right thing assuring the EU that JOBBIK is NOT
considered a Viable Party worthy of recognition in ANY political alliance with any Parliamentary Party.
However I think the foundations of Democracy in Hungary are definitely not as strong as in France or Germany. Hungarian Society
and the leading political parties do not seem to understand that
loosing or winning an election is not going to indefinitely affect the
system.

@Viktor – Yuhas’ numbers are way off. There’s aren’t 10m or 11m. The number is closer to 1.5m.
Also, I visited India in July. The Roma seem to have more in common with Hungarians than Indians. Most of the Indians I met in India & the US were more hardworking than the Hungarians I’ve seen.
