A lengthy EU legal procedure is no substitute for an unequivocal and dynamic Hungarian answer based on national interests, Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán declared yesterday in discussing the Hungarian-Slovak conflict.
There is no doubt that the conflict has a European dimension, but it must be understood that “the EU is not a nanny to whom one can run complaining if one of our playmates outsmarts us,” Orbán remarked.
The root of the trouble, he continued, is that Hungary appears to outsiders as a weak country, with which anything can be done. A mockery was made of the entire country through the President, he said, alluding to Slovakia’s refusal to allow President László Sólyom into the country on August 21. If there is no response to that, it will happen the next time as well, Orbán added.
He said he did not expect anything from Thursday’s Szécsény meeting, as one side is represented by a prime minister “who does not give a damn about European norms and laws” while the other is represented by “a provisional unauthorised prime minister who will be God knows where in a few months”.
In this situation Hungary, “when everyone knows that this cabinet will soon leave,” is unable to assert its interests at international talks, Orbán averred, adding that Hungary will not regain its strength and there will be no order or authority until elections are held.
In Budapest, House foreign affairs committee chairman Zsolt Németh of Fidesz said Fico had “wiped the floor with Bajnai” at Thursday’s meeting.
The meeting was a failure, he said, as the joint statement does not include a Slovak apology for banning Sólyom on August 21, nor that Hungary sets the amendment of the Slovak language law as a precondition to any further co-operation.

Hungary does look pathetic in the international circuit thanks to years of government having free reing of everything and anything.
This next statement kills me to admit to; but, when you lie with dogs, your gonna eventually end up with flies!
We the people of Hungary have allowed these dogs to have free rein! Never really questioning them, usually backing down…if God forbid you try to defend Hungary and our culture/history. And when things are going good.
How did we allow this to happen? When the sam hell did it happen? We are so close to loosing it all..who we are, what we are. What I want to know is, how do we get it all back? Do we have the will to do it?

You deride us for being tough on Hungary, maybe its because we actually live here and want Hungary to be a better place for everyone. We look at it with a clear eye and find no reason to fingerpoint at any one except the Hungarian people who choose to listen to people like you.
