Hungarian, Slovak leaders meet in bid to re-establish normal relations

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico did not apologise for his country’s refusal to admit President László Sólyom on August 21 and offered no concessions on the controversial new language law during his meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai on Thursday.

Bajnai told the subsequent press conference in Szécsény, northern Hungary, that both parties accept the recommendations made by the OSCE Minorities Commissioner Knut Vollebaek regarding the Slovak language law. Vollebaek said last week that he had stressed at consultations with Slovak and Hungarian officials the importance of striking a balance between the right to strengthen the state language and the rights of minorities to the free use of their native language.

Although the two sides have differing interpretations of the planned visit by Sólyom to Komárno on August 21, both consider what happened “regrettable,” according to a joint statement.

Consultations at expert level will be held on such meetings lest anything of the kind occur in the future, Bajnai added.

The two parties confirmed their commitment to the basic EU principle on the free movement of individuals and stressed the importance of free contacts without hindrance between EU citizens.
Bajnai and Fico agreed to take firm action against extremism and to work against xenophobia, intolerance, chauvinism and nationalism, as well as all forms of violence and their export to other countries.

Fico called the meeting useful and successful. Inviting Bajnai to visit Slovakia at any time, he proposed that a meeting be held in Komárno, where a statue of missionaries Cyril and Methodius will be erected.

The situation of national minorities in Slovakia meets European norms, Fico said, as hundreds of minority schools operate and the minorities are granted support in cultural and political areas. He described as “lies” claims that the new Slovak language law restricts the use of the Hungarian language, adding that all ethnic Hungarians in Slovakia can continue to freely use their mother tongue.

Bajnai said that from the viewpoint of the EU the two countries appear as two quarrelling nursery boys who proceed along artificially pumped up emotions.

Fico demanded that the Hungarian government abolish the Forum of Hungarian Representatives in the Carpathian Basin.

The two also discussed motorway and energy projects.

The visit ended after 6.15 p.m. when life returned to normal in the small Nógrád county town. No disturbances took place in the town.

Slovak National Party chairman Ján Slota said the summit did not solve anything and again accused Hungary of irredentism and lying.

Bajnai is a communist. Pure and simple…no he isn”t!
Fico and Bajnai what a pair of sad fucking misfits!
If Bajnai is the best Hungary can offer – god help us all!
A pathetic language law dispute created as a diversion to ensure Hungary and Hungarians are
kept out of touch with reality. A country in social and economic decline with nothing to recommend it on the world stage to other nations as nice place to live, invest, or vacation.
Fat lazy bastards everywhere and a corrupt commie government.. an unworkable tax system..loans that
threaten to bankrupt the country…corruption in every nook and cranny of commercial enterprise..
antiquated local government,,a preposterous justice system..university graduates in huge numbers work abroad..three million pensioners..
villages dying:-starved of cash..only gypsies want to live here…etc etc etc 100million euros of loan money via IMF/EU misplaced? And the commie saboteur MSZP government still hold on to power!
How?? Why?? The people allow it. The people voted them in. They are being sold down the river. They deserve it!

  4. @VoiceofReason Are you suggesting that Jobbik is just a hand puppet for MSZP? If the langauge law is just communist false flag diversion, then Jobbik is definitely keeping this issue alive and playing for governments benefit.

  5. Kane says:

Jobbik wasn’t even there, they dont have any media support, only Hungarian people power.

  6. Viking says:

    Kane/Law/Dove/Free/etc,
And to what does Jobbik want to use all this “Hungarian people power” in regards to Slovakia in the current situation?
‘Liberate Northern Hungary’ (Slovakia for the rest of the world) or just let its 3 MEPs make some speeches in the European Parliament?
    What should Hungary do now?

  7. Kane says:

@VT Jobbik should bend you over, grab a Gypsy crimanal and fuck you up the arse! you Troll! Then again you might enjoy that, so on second thoughts tie you up and make you watch 48 hours repeats of Hungarian 2006 police brutality video’s.

  8. Best says:

The draconian measure dubbed “The Slovak Language Protection Act” drastically violates the language rights of minorities, represents the next chapter in the forceful assimilation attempts ongoing since the end of WWII and may only trigger further conflagrations. The fact, that the law exempts the Czech language only proves its anti-Hungarian motivations.
The Hungarian government should have long ago acted on behalf of the indigenous Hungarians who have been living in Felvidek over a millenium, to deter our northern neighbor’s numerous unfriendly gestures of late, but tolerated them instead, practically abandoning our compatriots outside of the country.
Jobbik has long pressed its position, that Hungary needs strong foreign representation fighting with all diplomatic means at its disposal for respect of the constitutional rights of our citizens living in her expropriated territories.

  9. justasking says:

    @ Best
From your lips to Gods ears!
How many times has the “Hungarian” government, turned it’s back on it’s own people (magyars in the out lying areas)over the years, when an opportunity arose and something could have, if not been done, then at least attention brought to it, on their behalf?
Missed opportunities that in any sane/for the people government would have taken ahold of and run with it?
PS: Law where are you?? I’m gone for a week and what? You disappear?? Get your ass back on this web-site!!!
