Fidesz’s popularity among decided voters dropped from 65% in July to 60% in September, while that of the Socialists rose from 21% to 23%, according to a Szonda Ipsos survey. The poll suggests that Fidesz has lost 800,000 supporters since July.
Support went up from 9% to 11%, for the far right Jobbik, stayed at 2% for the Democratic Forum, moved up from 1% to 2% for the new Politics Can Be Different, and remained at 1% for the Free Democrats, and nil for the Christian Democrats. Some 42% of respondents were undecided.
The difference in the support of Fidesz and the Socialists is greatest among manual workers, where Fidesz registers 40-42% support and the Socialists 7%.
The Socialists’ strength continues to be provided by elderly voters, as the party is favoured by 24% of those over 60 years of age whereas Fidesz has 21% support.
Both Fidesz and the Socialists have reserves among the undecided voters. One out of four potential voters prefers the Socialists, representing about 300,000 people, while one in seven, about 170,000, lean towards Fidesz.
The results are based on a survey of 1,500 adults on September 3-10. The margin of error is 2.5%.
