Close to 400 Roma women have initiated legal proceedings against Oszkar Molnar, an MP of the opposition Fidesz party and mayor of Edeleny (NE Hungary), over his “defamatory remarks” on Roma women, a local Roma leader told MTI on Friday.
Molnar claimed at a local council meeting earlier that Roma women living in two nearby villages had deliberately harmed their unborn children in order to receive higher state benefits. On Monday some 500 Roma protested at the mayor’s office in Edeleny, demanding his resignation and departure from politics.
Altogether 254 women from Szendrolad and another 115 from Lak filed a complaint, said Norbert Kalo, deputy head of the Roma self-government of Szendrolad.
He said that the president of Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen County Roma self-government, Geza Bordas, had also filed a complaint at the county’s chief prosecutor’s office against Molnar.
The mayor earlier said he insisted on his charges and would provide evidence in court.
Here’s a quick NPOV statement, so please refrain from the flames that I know will follow shortly. Does social services keep records of newborns with birth defects? and if so, do they record where and what kind of birth defects? Cherchez le femme….Qui Bono, or any other cute little term
@ Will G
First off, what does NPOV stand for?
Pending on the type of “birth defect”. Alot of the times, certian defects, unless they are physical can go undetected til a baby is older ie: brain injuries from O2 starvation, drugs etc, and you see that their growth pattern/responce to certian stimulus is off.
What caught me off gaurd was that he said that he has evidence…that to mean could mean maybe the women were taking known drugs that is/can be harmful to the fetus by either causing irreversable brain damage or infact physical defects.
Years ago, back in the 60′s there was a drug that was prescribed to help off set morning sickness, it was later found out that is caused unbelievable physical birth defects. Off the top of my head I can not remember what drug it was but I think it started with a “T”.
The only way that this drugs was later found to be the interlocking link of course was because of the hugh amount of babies born with these defects. Although it was out lawed in I beleive in North America, I understand that other parts of the world still perscribed this drug.
Having a birth defect for whatever reason should not be labled “cute little term”. If in fact such goings on are occuring, looking at it from the babies point of view, it can be a very hard and dismal life
@justasking – Thalidomide.
I’ll wait to see the evidence.
@justasking: You are probably referring to ‘Thalidomide’.
The ‘evidence’ will of course have to take into account any base rates related to increased rates of birth defects resulting from poverty, poor social services, nutrition etc…
Somehow I don’t think there is going to be any sensible data presented, just a lot of hearsay and social myth making.
NPOV= Neutral Point Of View. So me saying does social services keep records is completely neutral, as it denigrates no one, offends no one (it shouldn’t at least). Know, if i said something like we all know that this guy does this to that, that wouldn’t be Neutral.
Though, basically, I’m going to have to agree here with Vandarlo, that no matter what data is presented, it’ll get skewed into whatever someone wants it to mean. That on the other hand is my point of view, lol
Thalidomide was developed by the German company Chemie Grünenthal, who had to pay hundreds of millions of Marks in a settlement.
In Germany the brandname was Contergan.
Obviously we are all babies of the 60′s. I know my Mom was perscribed this med but said that she was uncomfortable taking any kind of medication during any of her pregnancies. Thank God for that.
So, has anybody heard about this situation occuring? I mean even before Molnar brought this up?
@Justasking,
Unfortunately, I’ve been hearing this for years. It’s been widely disseminated throughout Hungary that the Rom will do all these screwed up things to harm the infants to get greater benefits from the government, and how they get so much more welfare than regular Hungarians and on and on. Personally, as I’ve no clue how welfare in Hungary works, nor have I ever been on Welfare, I was never really that concerned with it, but, yes, suffice to say, I personally have been hearing this stuff for a long time. Lmao, i bet if you go to kuruc, you’ll get all these great articles with links, and spreadsheets and other really cool attachments showing how it’s all true, lol…
@ Will G
Would you please stop with all these lol’s, NPOV and lmao’s. I don’t a a bloody clue to what you are talking about. Yes, I know it’s the newest trand and that everybody does it; but, from my stand point, it is extremly annoying !
I’m not trying to target you, just trying to have a decent discussion in complete sentences.
Hello justasking,
I appreciate your point; given that English is a second language to most of us, and that these abbreviations were not in use just 10 years ago, it’s a fair request.
There is a younger generation that is so accustomed to communicating this way, that they forget that this is not a formal means of expression. Texting syntax like “u r a crazy 1″ is even worse. I suppose we can always “google” these to get the meaning, but it doesn’t make for good writing style, and sometimes distracts from the intellectual content of the message.

The most disturbing fact in this story is that the mayor of Edeleny Oszkar Molnar claims that he has evidence about “that Roma women living in two nearby villages had deliberately harmed their unborn children in order to receive higher state benefits”.
By not reporting his evidence to the Police he has allowed this alleged practice and himself becomes an accessory to the crime, because it is of course criminal to deliberately harm even unborn children.
So he looks to be in a lose-lose situation and will be convicted for either protecting criminals or plain lying.
Laci;
Piss off!! I just found out about this thing called twittering!
Cut me some slack, I’m having to familiarize myself with some kid named Hanna Montanna…now you bff me! What the F*&^&
Zsuzsa
Hi ZsuZsa!
We can always ask if Miss Montana would like to help Erik around here as associate editor; perhpas she could get us all up to speed!
Laci;
Who is Erik?
As for Hannah Montanna; she is an American girl from Tennessee, I don’t think she can spell “editor” let alone be an assistant! She does have catchy tunes though!
Hello again ZsuZsa,
Erik is the manager or owner of this website. Hannah is a 14 year old singer; I took your mention of her as jest, and so I responded in like kind. This whole trend of texting and it’s strange abbreviations is driven by that age group. I feel that as time goes on this is going to get worse unfortunately. When these kids grow up, that will be the only kind of writing they know.
Actually NPOV is a correct acronym, and in no way considered associated with the whole internet chat phenom, and while i didn’t take offense, 2 usages in 3 paragraphs of chatspeak doesn’t really imply that I can’t hold a conversation….
Hi WillG
It’s alright. I didn’t mean that, but abbreviations reminded me of chatspeak. For myself, I won’t be using such shorthand.
@ Will G;
Nobody said that you can not hold a conversation. It’s just stumps me at least, when I read your replys and sit here with a curled and vacant look on my face trying to figure out what you just said.
As the subject of internet acronyms has come up; I felt it helpful to provide a list of some of the more common ones. I do this for a couple of reasons. One, this is a European website, and so many of us might be helped. (Much of this originates from teens in the US and UK.) Second, I don’t think this is a passing fad; these conventions are here to stay. I run into this with ever increasing frequency nowadays on websites and blogs. I feel it’s more appropriate to private emails and texting, and I sincerely hope that we’ll continue to write in real sentences around here.
