Bajnai begins official visit to New York

Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai met investors at an event organised by Citibank in New York on Sunday.

Bajnai travelled to the US for a five-day visit to attend a UN general meeting.

He is scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon on Monday to discuss the effects of the global financial and economic crisis, as well as regional security policy issues in the Western Balkans and Afghanistan. Bajnai will brief Ban on Hungary’s human rights objectives and progress in setting up the Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities.

Bajnai is also scheduled to meet representatives of New York business life, as well as financier George Soros and former Budapest ambassador Nancy Brinker. He will also talk to Hungarian intellectuals living in New York and heads of Hungarian organisations as well as visiting the editorial office of The Wall Street Journal.

On Tuesday, Bajnai will attend the meeting on climate protection initiated by Ban attended by than 100 heads of state and government. The prime minister will address a roundtable discussion on the extension of the Kyoto treaty and attend the opening of the general debate of the UN’s 64th session.
