Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai on Wednesday said he would resign if parliament rejects the 2010 budget bill in November, though he said he was confident that the bill would clear Parliament.
Giving a lecture in Columbia University, Bajnai said that his crisis-managing government has a raison d’etre as long as it is able to take very important steps in very short time to handle the crisis.
In a question and answer session after, he said, “It makes no sense having a lame duck government … it would be worse than early elections.”
Bajnai, who is heading a minority Socialist government, added that active crisis management was a better option for Hungary than campaigning amidst the crisis.
Bajnai said he was optimistic of the outcome, and Parliament had already approved the toughest measures, namely the tax, pension and social-welfare reforms.
He reaffirmed his commitment not to run in next year’s spring parliamentary elections.
The international financial markets view Hungary’s economy more positively, he said, citing recent assessments by Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan and other banks of London and New York.
Bajnai expressed concern over the spread of protectionism and nationalism in various regions, saying that politicians tend to use nationalism to conceal economic problems that they are unable or unwilling to solve.
Bajnai said whoever win the elections next year, they should pursue a policy of sober mind, an austere and sound economic policy.

What an absolute asshole and what an empty threat!
he knows that they have the majority and there is no way that he will lose such a vote!
Utter, 100% commie twat!
Sounds like something a child would say! When will we get some true leaders in Parliament, leaders that understand the importance of their position and realize that government is a non-profit organization for the people, not just the few?
This is to scare all non-Fidesz MPs to vote yes.
It is not the first time and will not be the last time.
It is a normal parliamentarian way of work and something Fidesz always wanted the Government to do – If they loose they resign, not just strike another deal.
There is an opposition inside the MSZP that could create problems, and this ‘promise’ is part of that struggle. Not so many votes are needed to change the turn-out and MSZP-MPs will have a big local pressure to lobby for their specific thing if they will stand a chance in the upcoming election.
Fidesz will just say no to everything, which is very constructive as usual.
It was a question and answer session.
Such a session involves questions… and answers.
If someone says to you “If the budget isn’t passed, will you resign?” you can either not answer, and be accused of ducking the question; or you can answer no, and sound laughable; or you can answer yes, and sound at least consistent.
So just grow up, will you.
More communism – when will Hungarian decide to move onwards and upwards? It like groundhog day around here without the possibility of actually enjoying killing yourself with a bus or building and waking up fine the next morning.
Will it take 2 generations to die or will those 2 generations imbed the philisophies of corruption and depression in the minds of the X’s and Y’s?!
I hope the goose farmers get this small minded man … time to bring the pitch forks out … ops sorry the garda have them … Bajnai’s such a twat him and his commi friend the spokeswoman for the group are promoting protectionism and nationalism .. how can they even be called socialists … Gyurcsany et al whored and sold off half the countries assets for nothing .. why is that a Russian Mafia run the restaurant business in budapest ,, the ethical standard for any country “the medical profession” still taking money envelopes (I know they are not paid properly but its tax evasion/Curroption at the highest level)
