Majority expects Fidesz to form government without coalition partners

More than half of Hungarians, 58%, expect Fidesz to form a government on its own after next year’s parliamentary elections, according to a poll by the conservative Nézõpont institute. Only 33% disagree.

Some 49% of Socialist Party supporters and 52% of Jobbik supporters believe that Fidesz will be able to govern on its own.

Among decided party voters 52% would vote for Fidesz, 11% for the Socialists and 8% for Jobbik.

A separate poll by Tárki shows support at 65% for Fidesz, 18% for the Socialists and 12% for Jobbik, with the Democratic Forum getting 3% and the Free Democrats 1%.

Tárki found that 45% of those eligible would definitely vote. Fidesz and Jobbik supporters are the most committed, and those of the Socialists and the Forum less so. Supporters of the Free Democrats are the most undecided.

The vast majority of respondents, 70%, believe that Fidesz will pursue a different economic policy to that of the present cabinet, while 22% think there will be little difference, according to the Nézõpont survey. Some 53% of respondents say it was not a good decision for Hungary to take out a loan from the IMF. Only 33% agree with the decision.

Overall, 56% do not believe that the Gyurcsány era has ended, as that number believes that Gyurcsány influences the present cabinet. This view is held by 71% of Fidesz supporters and 38% of Socialist followers.

Only 20% of those interviewed support the construction of the King’s City casino near Lake Velence. It is opposed by 68% of Fidesz supporters 51% of Socialist voters, and 67% of Jobbik followers.

The Nézõpont survey was conducted September 14-18, and the Tárki survey September 4-15.
