Six Hungarian and Slovak towns sign cooperation pact

Three cities from Hungary and three from Slovakia on Monday signed a founding agreement on forming a cooperation group, the mayor of Tata, one of the Hungarian towns participating, told MTI.

Jozsef Michl said the initiative will be directed by Komarno, a town split along the two countries borders. The organisation, established as a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC), will be registered in Slovakia, he added.

Participating towns beside Komarom and Komarno are Tata and Kisber in central Hungary on the Hungarian side and Kolarovo and Hurbanovo on the Slovak side, Michl added.

The group will be active in projects bidding for European Union funding, mainly in the area of health care, education and infrastructure development.

The agreement now signed will be the third of its kind between Hungary and Slovakia. One of these cooperations resulted in the building of a bridge across the Danube at Esztergom/Sturovo.

Can anybody tell me more about this area and the “towns” involved? How long have they been “working” together and what type of relationship do these border towns have, strained, indifferent, accomodating, what?
