Budapest Socialists debate future of discredited leaders

The Budapest Socialist Party executive committee will hold a special party council meeting tomorrow to address internal dissent against its leadership, mainly because of the recent scandals at Budapest transport company BKV.

Péter Farkas, a 17th District chapter executive committee member, has initiated a petition drive calling on Budapest chapter chairman Sándor Burány and deputy mayor Miklós Hagyó to resign, and proposed a Budapest conference by mid-November.

The Budapest party chapter will launch its nomination process a week on Wednesday and name the Socialist Budapest mayoral candidate before the December party convention. Deputy mayor Csaba Horváth is a frontrunner after pledging to put BKV in order.

The December party convention will name the Socialist prime ministerial candidate and put together the party’s national list.
