Slovak nationalists demand ethnic Hungarian politician apologize in Slovak

The Slovak National Party (SNP) has asked for an enforcement order to compel Hungarian Coalition Party (MKP) deputy chairman Miklós Duray to reissue his apology in the Slovak language, and not in Hungarian as he did.

Duray described SNP as a fascist party three years ago, and was subsequently convicted for violating the party’s right to good reputation. He wrote an apology in Hungarian, attaching a photocopy of the original ruling in Slovak.

“As the binding court ruling defines the apology in the official state language, Duray has not satisfied it,” SNP caucus leader Rafael Rafaj said.

Legal enforcer Milan Somík told television news channel TA3 that he has asked the court for permission to enforce the ruling: “I can fine Duray up to €30,000 if does not obey,” he said.

Duray responded that “no Slovak law orders the language in which the apology should be made. As the Slovak constitution also guarantees that ethnic minorities can use their mother tongue in official affairs, I will not change my decision,” he said.

“The legal order is nonsensical because the lawyer has no means of enforcing it. This is merely a political battle,” Duray added.
