Orbán distances party from MP’s bigoted statements

Hungary’s main opposition Fidesz leader on Wednesday called anti-Semitic remarks by Fidesz MP Oszkar Molnar “awkward”.

Orban told commercial television TV2 in an interview that every MP was expected to “carefully consider his choice of words”.

Molnar, a mayor of a NE Hungary town, recently made statements about the Roma, gays and Jewish people widely seen as racist.

The ruling Socialists have called on Fidesz to take a clear stand against Molnar and oust him from the party, not least because he has said he planned to run for re-election in 2010 in Fidesz colours.

Orban earlier said he would wait to see if Molnar had sufficient support in his constituency before commenting on his candidacy. He denied comment on Molnar’s remarks.

Molnar told a local TV show recently: “[...] global capital — Jewish capital if you like — wants to devour the whole world, especially Hungary.”

In response to Socialist spokesman Istvan Nyako’s suggestion that Fidesz has “sided with fascists and segregators,” Orban said that Molnar’s remarks are “awkward” but being in the same party with Nyako would be worse.

Asked if Fidesz would oust Molnar, Orban said they would if he did anything that went against rules defined in the party’s founding charter.

You call that ‘distancing’ the party from Molnár’s comments?
If Orbán had wanted to distance the party from the remarks, he would have uttered a clear and unequivocal denunciation of racism and bigotry and said there is no place for them in his party. He would not have taken the cowardly option of denying comment on Molnar’s remarks.
Instead, he says that the person who says such idiotic and hateful things can represent the party again next year.
This is what people mean when they say that Fidesz puts its short-term interests above the interests of the country.

There were no anti-Semitic statements by Molnar
Oszkar. He spoke the facts. Go on-line and check
it for yourself. I am getting sick and tired of
people screaming anti-Semitism left and right with
or without a reason just to grab the attention of
average people away from the real issues: such as
the land and the water of Hungary, the miserable
state of the economy, that the poverty level is
one of the highest among the EU countries in
Hungary, that foreign language knowledge is one of
the worst among EU countries in Hungary, should I
continue? One of my grandfathers was a Jew, so I
am a quarter Jewish, but I am totally sick and
tired of this former communist power elite crying
wolf when there is no wolf. And when the real wolf
comes it will be too late. Jews always come with
this survival story that they have to overreact
and be paranoid so that they would survive. Well,
let me give you a little piece of advice my dear
fellow Hungarian Jews: maybe if you stop cheating
people out of their hard earned money and run some
of your mind tricks on honest, hard working people
then you would not have to be afraid that some
lunatic might one day grabs power and wants to
send all of you to the gas chambers. Just be nice
with people, pay them honestly for their hard
work, do not steal, do not cheat, do not lie and
your lives will never be threatened and I will be
the first one in line to defend you. And of course
these statements only apply to those who
personally take it not to every Jew

It is very fashionable to knock everybody and anything that is slightly critical of Gypsies, Jews and Communists!
Seems that telling it like it is, is not an option anymore!

@Simpson “Seems that telling it like it is, is not an option anymore”. How would you, poster of so many blind rabid, ignorant posts, know?

    now then…
Mr.Molnar’s remarks and his statement that israeli
kids learn hungarian language at school for the
“planned invasion” of hungary shows only to sadly
the intellectual mindset (if there is something like this)in this party.
Even Fidesz latest attempt to distance itself a bit
from jobbik without loosing the potential votes by
calling members of jobbik “pagans” etc .is from my
point of view a sign of complete loss of reality.
Orbans helpless attemps to control the molnar-damage is annother worrying sign.
A party which gets before elections into troubled
waters, without a “certified” captain does not promise to be any good after election.

    Dear Anonymous,
I would like to support you in one way.
Jews ,who are criminal should be brought before
the judges. There is no doubt about it.
However to single out Jews as the main or only
culprit and the main reason for hungarian misery
    is anti-semitic.
Mr.Molnar statement ,for example his claim that
israels learn hungarian at school for planned
immigration/invasion of hungary etc. is utter
nonsense and ment to stir up specific feelings among let us say the “urban-hungarian population.
    Concerning the corruption,theft etc claims.
There is always somebody who asks for money for
certain favours and there are those who pay.
Both are criminals.Hungarians, jews and hungarian-jews for the sake of argument. There are however
other nationals involved in this trade too:
    Germans,austrians,irish,spanish,russians etc.
How is it then that only the jews (and of course the roma)are being singled out in this and similar
    foren?Why?

What stops Molnar from running for Mayor next election?
    Nothing.
The question is just if Fidesz wants him inside, or not. That has nothing to do with “Democracy”. That is just how Fidesz want to do things and it is up to them to decide.
Others can decide what they think about Fidesz in respect to what Fidesz does.

What Orban answered was “wait to see if Molnar had sufficient support in his constituency before commenting on his candidacy”.
What it means is that if you are a child-molester, an open fascist or whatever, Orban will first check if he will lose any local votes, before acting.
On the other hand what would you expect from a populist?
Principles, political and others are just something interchangeable for votes.
