EC declines to intervene in affair over Slovak barring of Hungarian president

Vice President of the European Commission responsible for Justice, Freedom and Security Jacques Barrot said on Wednesday that he considered the affair of Slovakia refusing to allow Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom to enter the country closed.

“This is a bilateral affair between Hungary and Slovakia, as I have already explained to the delegations of the two countries when they visited me,” Barrot said. “As a matter of fact, I believe the incident was closed when the prime ministers of the two countries met for talks,” he added.

Hungary’s government spokesperson said on Tuesday that Hungary had asked the European Commission to launch an infringement procedure against Slovakia for denying entry to Solyom.

Hungarian-Slovak relations have suffered a series of strains, the last of which is a new Slovak state language law which Hungary perceives to be discriminatory as well as Slovakia’s prevention of an unofficial visit by President Solyom on August 21.
