Mayor famed for tough stance on benefits founds new party

Monok’s independent mayor Zsolt Szepessy has founded a political party, calling it the Összefogás Párt (“Unity Party”) to run at the next parliamentary elections.

The party’s goals are to protect national interests, decentralise politics and treat everyday problems, he said.

Szepessy told Magyar Hírlap that his party will target undecided voters and will field candidates for Parliament in all individual constituencies, adding that he is sure that they will win seats in Parliament.

Szepessy gained national attention by refusing to pay state benefits to parents whose children did not regularly attend school in his north-eastern town.
