Government proposes anti-corruption package in its final six months

The Bajnai government gave parliament it's proposed anti-corruption package yesterday nol.hu reports. The package came over six months after the current government assumed office and with less than six months to go before elections. The aim of the package would be to create a more transparent government to prevent corruption, which would be a good thing, but why all of sudden? The Socialists have been in power for almost eight years, yet a Socialist government only put forward an anti-corruption bill with less than six months to go before an election they know they will lose. It seems like the motivation behind it is "if we can't have any more, neither can they." Or is this simply a tacit admission that there is nothing left to take?

I was thinking about this the other day
- What would be the 'badest' the outgoing (by all means) Government could do?
Of course propose to put in the hardest and toughest anti-corruption measures ever in Europe.
For Fidesz it is a lose-lose situation.
If they oppose it, they open up for rather good critic, if the approve it, well, then maybe they will have to be into politics for the right reasons in the end of the day.
It is hilarious and it is Politics when it is as best, a strategic game with a lot of tactical manoeuvring.
Let us now hope it will be the most strongest and toughest anti-corruption measures ever seen in Europe. Who can be against it?

Drawing up plans to fight corruption is one thing.
Getting them implemented in a fashion that will be
"effective" is quite a different ballgame altogether.
Fidesz, will receive the "poison chalice" as the next government. They are certainly not capable of
turning things around by themselves. They do not have the "personnel" nor, for that matter, a leader in Orban Viktor that has the strength and
vision to guide Hungary to the top of the pile
where it should be.
Academics, philosophers, think tanks, scholars,
shall do their best to help. It doesn't matter because, this is la-la-land where gypos survive on
free housing and welfare payments while native Hungarians toil abroad. Reality check for everybody! It's cold outside..soon it will be freezing.

Rendben,

"to guide Hungary to the top of the pile
where it should be"

I think half of Hungary's problems come down to unreasonable expectations: why should Hungary be at the top of the pile?

[Apologies in advance, but I am in super moan-mode this week. Must be the lack of sunlight.]

Wonder why the people might be just a teensy bit cynical about this? First it's been approved by the SZDSZ who oppose the idea of publishing the details of all contract over 5 million forints, whose Majoralship of Budapest has produced very little at an extortionate cost for its taxpayers - and who now thinks he (Demszky Gábor) can buy off the people by crowing about his achievements and attempt to finally offer something for the people by reducing tax on heating (if the EU allows). Surely the signs of a desperate man who wants to be loved and not rightly loathed.

2002 Medgyessy tried to indite Fidesz for their thievery during their reign. Some of these ran to 2007 when they ran out of time and where dropped. When someone is guilty those in power don't prosecute they site and wait.
2003 there was the 'glass-pocket' law (üvegzseb-törvény) that was suposed to make government contracts transparent. Followed by Medgyessy's anti-corruption social ethics QUANGO bollocks (Köztársasági Etikai Tanács) that lasted for all of a year.
I'll skip a few for brevity...
2007 April sees Gyurcsány's anti-corruption smoke screen with the Transparency Working Group. Sod all resulted. Then in Feb 2009 he wanted to start another. Nothing.
Now this.
A government of goldfish for goldfish.
