Tarki poll gives Fidesz fourfold leads over Socialists

The main opposition Fidesz party increased its support to be four times higher among the voting-age population ahead of the ruling Socialists in October, a poll released to MTI by the Tarki institute on Wednesday showed.

Support for Fidesz this month was 39 percent, compared with 36 percent a month ago, whereas support for the Socialists remained unchanged at 10 to 11 percent, said Tarki.

Among those with clear party preferences, Fidesz enjoyed a 46 percentage point lead ahead of the Socialists in October, an increase on a 42 percentage-point lead in last month, the poll said.

Among those decided voters who would turn out to vote, Fidesz was backed by 68 percent, up from 65 percent in September, whereas the ruling party’s support went down to 17 percent from 18 percent.

The third party to pass the 5 percent parliamentary threshold was the radical nationalist Jobbik, which enjoyed a 6 percent backing among all eligible voters. The party’s support among decided voters willing to vote, however, decreased to 9 percent from 12 percent in September.

The two minor opposition parties in parliament, the liberal Free Democrats and the Hungarian Democratic Forum, would fail to pass the threshold with a support of 1 percent among all voters.

If elections were held this Sunday, 48 percent of eligible voters would turn up for the vote, up from 45 percent a month ago.

The poll was conducted from October 9 to 22 on a sample of 1,000 over-18 respondents.
