Orbán cautions EU against giving way to Czech “blackmail” on Lisbon treaty

Viktor Orban, head of Hungary’s main opposition Fidesz, cautioned the European Union against giving way to what he called “the blackmailing by the Czech president” and called on the Hungarian government not to accept any concession as a result on the Lisbon Treaty.

Orban, who is Vice President of the European People’s Party, attended the meeting the party held just before the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

The meeting discussed the current situation around the ratification of the EU’s reform Lisbon Treaty and the demand of Czech President Vaclav Klaus for an opt-out from the treaty’s Charter of Fundamental Rights, a condition he has set for signing the treaty’s ratification document.

“We refuse to accept such blackmail and consider it unrealistic that either the current or the next Hungarian government should ever support proposals under which certain member states want to exempt themselves from European fundaments of coexistence, in fact the coexistence of the Czech and Hungarian people, within the community,” Orban told reporters.

The Czech Republic needs the EU as much as the EU needs that country, said Orban.
