Political analyst and constitutional lawyer Péter Tölgyessy was not so exuberant about forner Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány’s speech last week at a Socialist Party function. Tölgyessy, who once upon a time was also the chairman of the Free Democrats back when people would still admit to voting for them told fn.hu that Gyurcsány’s speech is evidence that the man is not a democrat.
Gyurcsány is the only person to believe that he or she is capable of leading the left, and his speech was simply fear-mongering aimed at the other side. A person who speaks like this is not a democrat, not to mention this tactic appears to have given [Fidesz chairman] Viktor Orbán the most popularity he’s ever enjoyed.
Tölgyessy has been critical of Gyurcsány in the past, but I am really eager to see how the Socialists will respond to this, since the speech was meant be something akin to “Gyurcsány’s comeback.” Of course, the Socialists may be too preoccupied spinning something else for the moment.
