Hungary’s new Ambassador to the US Bela Szombati presented his credentials to US President Barack Obama in Washington on Wednesday.
At the meeting, Szombati spoke about the Hungarian government’s anti-crisis measures, and referred to the integration of the Roma minority, as a top challenge for the country in the coming decade. The US president’s “encouraging reply” concerning Hungary’s political and economic endeavours “confirmed good bilateral relations”, Szombati told MTI following the meeting.
The Hungarian ambassador made his introduction together with peers from 13 other countries including Italy, Canada and Kosovo. He was accompanied by his wife and son at the meeting.
Szombati told Hungarian journalists earlier that he would pursue the diplomatic directions defined by his predecessors, adding “extra momentum, visibility and dynamism” to them.
Szombati, Hungary’s ambassador to the UK and France earlier, has replaced Ferenc Somogyi in Washington.
