Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai on Thursday designated László Andor, a member of the board of directors of the EBRD, to the EU Commission, saying there can be no doubt about the candidate’s ability and integrity.
At a joint press briefing with Andor, Bajnai said the nominee should meet the democratic parliamentary forces.
Andor described his candidacy as a great responsibility, noting that as EU commissioner his performance could affect Hungary’s reputation. His first priority is to find a way out of the financial crisis, he said, which, although it did not come from Europe, deeply shook all EU member countries.
Andor is expected to be made EU Commissioner for regional affairs, Kossuth Rádió reported.
EBRD president Thomas Mirow welcomed Andor’s nomination, saying he has made an extraordinary contribution to the work of the London-based bank in the past four years.
Andor, 43, has represented Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Croatia at the EBRD since 2005.
He is chairman of the financial and transaction committee within the EBRD board of directors.
He was an economic advisor to former prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsány.
