Former finance minister Lajos Bokros should run as the joint candidate for prime minister of the Socialists, the Free Democrats and the Democratic Forum at next year’s parliamentary elections, Free Democrat chairman Attila Retkes suggested.
In an interview published on Népszava’s website on Tuesday, Retkes said Bokros’s candidacy could stop Fidesz from winning a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
Forum spokesman Szabolcs Kerék-Bárczy said Retkes had proposed Bokros because he cannot find a candidate from his own party.
Socialist spokeswoman Bernadett Budai said the party will select a candidate for prime minister at the December 12 convention.
It is conceivable that the Free Democrats could field joint candidates with the Democratic Forum or the Socialists in a dozen constituencies, Retkes said, adding that he is not thinking of a joint list.
On another matter, Retkes said he agrees with Budapest mayor Gábor Demszky that the party should find a mayoral candidate acceptable to left-wing and liberal voters who will be able to defeat the “authoritarian and limited democrat” István Tarlós.
