Fidesz opposes nomination of Andor as Hungary’s EC commissioner

Fidesz MEPs will not support the nomination of László Andor to the EU Commission, the group announced on Wednesday.

Andor has no experience in public administration, politics or EU matters, and he is unknown both in Hungary and the EU, the group said. They added that Andor is not fit to represent Hungarian interests, as he is viewed as “one of the most lightweight” of the 27 candidates for the Commission.

In reply, the Socialist parliamentary caucus said the “childishly sulking” Fidesz and Christian Democrats ought to be pleased with the choice of Andor, who, with his “immaculate professional career and outstanding professional values” could be one of the most dynamic members of the European Commission. Andor is a director of the EBRD.

Andor stands a realistic chance of obtaining the regional affairs portfolio, as several signs suggest that he will have no real rival, according to Bruxinfo website editor Zoltán Gyévai.
