Ukrainian ambassador summoned over textbooks for ethnic Hungarians

The Foreign Ministry on Friday summoned Ukraine’s Ambassador to Hungary to enquire about the lack of Hungarian language textbooks for ethnic Hungarian pupils in west Ukraine, the ministry told MTI in a statement.

Senior official at the ministry Jeno Faller summoned Dmitro Tkach after learning that Ukraine’s education ministry had not ordered Hungarian language editions of textbooks for the tenth grade in one hundred ethnic Hungarian schools in the region for the 2010-2011 school year, the statement said.

The Ukrainian ministry’s conduct is the direct consequence of a government 2008 decree which Hungary has repeatedly raised objections to, the statement said.

Hungary sees the decree as a threat to teaching in the ethnic language in Ukraine, which is home to about 150,000 ethnic Hungarians.
