Foreign Minister meets ethnic Hungarian leaders from region

Foreign Minister Peter Balazs met leaders of ethnic Hungarian communities in neighbouring countries for talks in Budapest on Thursday.

Balazs gave them an outline of Hungary's foreign policy tasks and main objectives including policies towards communities of Hungarians living beyond the borders.

The foreign minister, who initiated the meeting, emphasised that Hungary's nation policy was one of the government's priorities managed by the Prime Minister's Office, but in a continuous coordination with the foreign ministry.

With two new states coming into existence in the region, Hungary now has seven neighbours and during regular talks with them the situation of ethnic kin in those countries is a topic to be included in the agenda.

Foreign affairs tasks and objectives have increased, so the foreign ministry has increased the staff of diplomatic missions in neighbouring countries and at its departments working with those countries, Balazs said.

The meeting was attended by Hungarian ethnic leaders from Austria, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

“While both American and British leaders wanted to come to a fair and reasonable deal, France's interests were much more aggressive and demanding as many of the battles had been fought on French soil. Although they had agreed after the treaty was signed many world leaders agreed that some of France's demands were far too harsh and unsympathetic.”

The French prime minister Clemenceau and the French delegation's main goal was to practically destroy the Central Powers, so none of them would be able to wage war again. Andre Tardieu, the French delegate in charge of the peace committee regarding Austria- Hungary, had very similar views. He saw France's relative safety in disabling Germany, creating powerful Slavic states -Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia - in Central Europe, and increasing Romania’s territory. This would ensure that a strong, centralized power, like Austria- Hungary would never emerge in Central Europe again. Tardieu opposed plebiscites in Hungary, because if they were to prevail, the Slavic states he had hoped for couldn't be created.
The Trianon treaty turned the nationalities of Eastern Europe, who had always lived in coexistence, into sworn enemies.

Chirac calls for reform of Yugoslav federation
French President Jacques Chirac called on the people in the republic of Montenegro and UN-run Kosovo province to take part in a reform of the Yugoslav federation.
"The split of the country can not be a peaceful and stable solution in the modern world," Chirac said in his speech at Belgrade University Friday.
As Podgorica and Pristina have threatened to secede from Yugoslavia, Chirac said a "solution can not be found in a policy of secession, in an approach... based on the logic of confrontation."
"In a time when Europe speeds up its process of integration and solidarity, it is an anachronism that its southeast continue a process of disintegration," Chirac insisted.
He expressed hope that "this message will be heard and well-understood in Kosovo and Montenegro (as well as in) Macedonia," where ethnic Albanian rebels earlier this year launched an insurgency against the government, demanding more rights for their community.
"A renewal of the Yugoslav federation, with respect to its integrity, is the best solution, not only for the stability in the region, but also for a development of harmonic relations between different parts of the Yugoslav society," Chirac said.

France does not run the EU and the EU is not interested in what happened in the past.
It works with the future, so should you.
Trianon is history and is being replaced, as you read this, with the future integration of the EU:
- Removing the inner borders (Schengen),
- Common currency (Euro),
- Letting the size of the population decide the influence, stopping the ridiculous behaviour that Malta with 400.000 inhabitants could dictate the future (Lisbon Treaty).
-
The future is decided in decisions made today, not theorizing on what was in different politician's mind 50-100 years ago.
The future is what we make of it, not what the old folks did of theirs.

And WTF has 9/11 to do with Hungary?
Or should we again have a 'debate' over that 'no jews were killed in 9/11' or something similar, instead of concentrating on the questions that is at hand here in this part of Europe?

The future belongs to us all. Those who continually dig up issues from the past should be "buried" there.
Hungary is a great country and needs a strong government with a capable leader to reinforce its position on the world stage.
