Hungarian PM welcomes election of first European Council President

Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai welcomed the election of the first President of the Council of the European Union, Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy following the EU summit in Brussels late on Thursday.

When selecting the president, decision makers of Europe were motivated to find a person who would strive for consensus and ready to make compromises, one that would not want to control the community all by himself, Bajnai told MTI.

Concerning Catherine Ashton, the EU’s new foreign minister, Bajnai said that she would primarily need her good organisational skills in the beginning, as she was in charge of setting up a complete diplomatic service for the community.

Now that the EU has filled the new posts created under the Lisbon Treaty, “Europe is in a position to renew itself amid the crisis,” Bajnai said.
