Political parties respond to embassies' joint statement on corruption
Hungary's governing Socialists said on Thursday that special attention must be paid to a joint statement by nine embassies criticising the lack of transparency in Hungary's investment environment, while main opposition Fidesz said it represented harsh criticism of nearly eight years of Socialist government.
According to the joint statement issued by the embassies of the US, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Japan, UK, Germany, Norway and Switzerland on Wednesday, foreign investors in Hungary are affected by "non-transparent behaviour" in areas of public utilities, broadcasting and elements of the transport infrastructure.
Head of the Socialists' foreign affairs working group Laszlo Kocsi told MTI that Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai will meet next week the ambassadors of the nine countries that issued the statement and brief them about the government's efforts. If Hungary's political elite were not "extremely divided" and were able to achieve at least a minimum level of consensus in some fundamental legal amendments, these issues could be resolved, he added.
Andras Cser-Palkovics of Fidesz interpreted the embassies' statement as a slap in the face of the government.
Gabor Horn, an MP of the liberal Free Democrats that governed in coalition with the Socialists between 2002 and 2008, said that it was vital to maintain investors' confidence in Hungarian economy and politics. It is bad news that despite a certain level of stabilisation that indeed started in the economy, the lack of investors' confidence in economy and politics exercises a contrary effect, he added.

While the statement is 'a slap in the face for the government', Fidesz should not be too smug. The situation has been the same under all governments and it is a slap in the face for all Hungarian (and foreign)participants in corrupt practices.
I don't suppose there will be any real change though. I cannot recall seeing any Fidesz proposaly that are more than cosmetic. Of course, there is Jobbik's solution.............jail or kill jews and gypsies, expel foreign business, muzzle all opposition and all will be well.

It is the expressed intention of the MSZP in 2010 to rename Hungary to “Zionnia” while also placing the entire country up for auction at Sotheby’s in Tel Aviv at a reserve price of forty-seven dollars and fifteen cents.
It is the declared policy of the SZDSZ that after 2010 all citizens be required to wear purple loon pants to and from work, while also that every schoolchild from the age of 11 up be provided with a weekly ration of Mojito flavoured anal butt-lube.
While as far as the MDF is concerned, their policy chief has recently put forward the dramatic proposal that all Tram drivers (with the exception of those riding the 59A) be compelled to stand on their heads and recite the Szózat backwards before they set off.
And in a controversial move, it is believed to be FIDESZ’s intention to pretend to be a squeaky clean government of reform after 2010, but actually be just the same bunch of tradition discarding, thieving, corrupt, Cayman Island bank stuffing bunch of bastards as their predecessors.
