Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai welcomed that the ruling Socialist Party presidium would recommend Attila Mesterhazy as the party’s prime minister candidate in the 2010 general elections.
The Socialist party’s presidium decided on Tuesday to recommend Mesterhazy, the party’s deputy leader and parliamentary group leader, for approval as prime minister candidate at a party congress on December 12.
Mesterhazy proved over the past six months that he would be suitable for the post, Bajnai told MTI on Tuesday evening.
“The Socialist parliamentary leader was one of my closest allies in implementing the government’s crisis-managing programme. He had a lion’s share in paving the way for Parliament to vote on the state budget earlier than previously, and that the Socialist MPs had approved the amendments to the budget in a greater than ever unity,” he said.
In office since April 2009, Bajnai has made it clear several times that he had no intention at all to run as prime minister candidate in the next general elections scheduled for next spring.
