Two top Hungarian courts were wrong to order a Hungarian historian to retract an article and pay legal costs after he wrote an article critical of the right-wing media, the European Court of Human Rights said on Tuesday. Laszlo Karsai had not been allowed to exercise his right to freedom of expression, the court said.
Hungary’s Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in 2004 upheld a defamation ruling and told Karsai to retract an article criticising the right-wing press for being apologists for former prime minister Pal Teleki, who was responsible to introducing anti-Jewish laws in 1920 and 1939.
The Strasbourg court awarded Karsai 4,000 euros.
“The applicant wrote the article in question in the course of a debate of utmost public interest, concerning Hungary’s coming to terms with its totalitarian past,” the court said a statement. “It therefore considered that its publication deserved the high level of protection granted to the press in view of its functions in a democratic society,” it added.

But on the making of using the phrase “Adjon az Istne…” against the law the Court is of course completely silent.

Because this is not against a left wing cause.
How long will be insist on being blind?
Such hypocrisy!
@ All
The hypocrisy of JOBBIK knows no bounds.
Crying “freedom of speech” they use “Adjon az Istenem” for their own evil purposes. Much like pretending that wearing ridiculous black outfits is just a fashion choice. Then they call themselves a Christians party.
What’s wrong with this picture?
Hello!!!! When you call yourself a “Christian” you should follow Christ’s teachings. Love one another, help the poor, the sick, the disenfranchised, provide food for the hungry, be good, kind, and generous to the less fortunate etc etc.
When you engage in hate mongering, lying, hurting others, bear false witness against others, and you still call yourself a Christian then you have “Taken the Lord’s name in vain.”
Doing that would disqualify JOBBIK from being Christian – nem igy van?
Let me guess. The Strasbourg Court is ruled by Jews, Romas and Communists. Its #1 aim is to CONSPIRE against the Hungarian legal system and have a mandate to overturn decisions made by Hungary’s Court of Appeal and Supreme Court
When will average patriotic Hungarians get pissed off with JOBBIK and let the EU know that they resent these low lives who make Hungarians the laughing stock of Europe? Make it known loud and clear? ( Luckily, the average N. American has never heard of these nut cases)
@Olga:
These crazies called Jobbik or British National Party or NPD(German National Party) or Belgian…, French Font National etc have followers in every country. I’m sure there also are some idiots like that in Canada – what’s their name ?
Don’t worry too much about them. One of the advantages of globalization and institutions like the EU is that these loonies will not get the power, at least not in civilized countries…
BTW: Welcome to the club! BerniBuggerBigmouthBadass has also given you a “name”…
Do you two believe your own garbage?
“Hungary coming to terms with its totalitarian past” What’s this all about?
Karsai the miserable fucking dimwit. Writing drivel about the so-called right-wing press in order to ingratiate himself with his pseudo-bolshevik buddies.
Let him write something more appropriate about the scheming and corrupt MSZP government with its erstwhile leaders: Lendvai,Bajnai,Gyurcsany Ferenc.
Will he? Will he not! How can you bite the hand that feeds you?
@ Wolfi
I actually had to stop and think if we had an official party like the BNP or the NDP and could not come up with one. So I googled the answer and came up with the following website:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fascist_movements_by_country_A%E2%80%93F
Canada is looking good.
Ironic that one of our official political parties is also the “NDP” – National Democratic Party. They are the ultra Left – go figure.
I don’t read Bernie’s postings any more. He has problems far beyond his obsessive repetitive postings on this website.
Are you back in Hungary?
Friends were transferred to Dusseldorf a couple of months ago. It seems that executives are allowed “family time” and are not expected to work 24/7 to get ahead like in Toronto. Only one person’s opinion of course.
@Olga: Holy smoke!
That list of fascist parties really is impressing, I didn’t know that wikipedia had something like this…
Thanks for the info. Yes we are in Hungary right now but will go to Germany for some days (to fetch our christmas presents) and return for a quiet holiday to Hungary. Though we’re Atheists, we like to give our friends and family some presents …
Our dog also prefers sylvester in Hungary because people here are not as crazy with fireworks as are the Germans. Last sylvester a house in my German hometown burned down because a little rocket was lodged somewhere in the roof. The fire brigade had to use a lot of water to keep the neighbouring houses (many of them around 500 years old) from also burning…
We do have them in Canada but they do not have much support. I walked into (accidentially) 2 of their demonstrations. Of course, they wear bandanas over their faces…while the anti-racists do not. The extremists hang around the skateboard park looking for disenfranchised kids to join. They even feed them and give them a place to stay.

@Tim Olga and Wolfi make a lot of sense. Listen to their words and ideas. They have heart. You must be one of those, those, other people.
European Soviet Union.

Of course, that is why Morvai is repeatedly requesting an investigation from the EU into the 2006 riots.
Jobbik just loves when some foreigners come and tell the Hungarians what they did wrong…
—
The European Court of Human Rights is *not* an EU-Court, but that is of course too much to understand for our resident Jobos.
-
The Court sits in Strasbourg and is an international judicial body established under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) of 1950 to monitor respect of human rights by states.
-
The European Convention on Human Rights, or formally named Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, is a convention adopted by the Council of Europe. All 47 member states of the Council of Europe are parties to the Convention. Applications against Contracting Parties for human rights violations can be brought before the Court by other states, other parties or individuals.
-
Russia and Azerbaijan are two of the 47 member states of this Court, so it is definitely not an EU Court.
Just shows the level of disinformation the ant-EU Mafia likes to spread, at the same time they are screaming for more involvement from the EU.
Makes great logic.

Of course the important is if you like what Karsai wrote, not defending his right to write BS, correct Tim?
Isten, Isten: Hypocrisy it is and more: ‘free speech,’ ‘democracy,’ etc. as used by the Karsais and Kertészs are code words/expressions, pregnant with threats that don’t really mean what the brainwashed masses think it means. Most of us can sense the threat part though only too well.

Yes, exactly the same argument people use to ban “antisemitism”, but then the “‘free speech,’ ‘democracy,’ etc.” should of course apply…
—
So, Pávaszem is just one in the row of people who think that one can block the “wrong” ideas with regulations.
@Viking: “Pávaszem is just one in the row of people who think that one can block the ‘wrong’ ideas with regulations” And you’re a racist Nazi who hates blacks, Gypsies and foreigners and you’re also a vicious Anti-Semite… Lay off the booze, Lapp!
