Hungary, Croatia discuss improving ethnic education

Hungary’s and Croatia’s joint committee on ethnic minorities discussed upgrading schools, plans for higher education, as well as the renovation of ecclesiastical properties at a session in Zagreb on Tuesday.

The committee focused on assistance for two secondary schools and a student hostel in Hungary and plans to add a new gym to a Hungarian school in Croatia, Ferenc Gemesi, state secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, told MTI.

Participants also raised plans to launch higher education courses in the native tongue of the Hungarian and Croatian ethnic minorities in both countries, and infrastructure developments for Hungarian-inhabited towns in Croatia, Gemesi said.

Despite Hungary’s tight finances, the government will not reduce funds to support Hungary’s minorities and ethnic kin in other countries, Gemesi added.
