Secret services minister mum on former Guantanamo inmate in Hungary

Minister in charge of the secret services Gabor Juhasz declined to confirm press reports on Tuesday about a former Guantanamo inmate being on his way to Hungary.

Juhasz told the press after a meeting of the parliamentary committee on national security that the former Guantanamo inmate’s exact date of arrival and future place of residence would not be announced in order to protect his safety and the country’s security.

The Hungarian state has agreed to offer him language learning opportunities, health-care services and housing, and assist him in finding a job and settling in, the minister said.

The US government on Tuesday said in a statement that a former Guantanamo inmate had been transferred to Hungary. The US expressed thanks to the Hungarian Government for receiving the former inmate.

The man, who is originally from the West Bank, was released from Guantanamo and sent to Hungary on Monday, the statement said. At the request of Budapest, the detainee’s identity has not been disclosed.
