Mayor threatened after rejecting request to erect Advent cross in public

The mayor of Csorna (Győr-Moson-Sopron County) received threatening calls after expressing his aversion to Advent crosses erected in public places, writes kisalfold.hu.

First, he rejected a request from a private individual to erect a cross on a square in the town, then, while accepting another request by Jobbik to hold a political event in the town, György Turi specified that after the event, any crosses erected at the location have to be removed. Following this, his phone number was posted on extreme-right portal kuruc.info.

“The first calls arrived early morning, I had no idea what they were talking about,” Turi told kisalfold.hu. The mayor, who did not want to repeat any phrases used by callers to describe him, has ordered Jobbik to make kuruc.info publish a correction to the story or face a lawsuit.

Here we see the Hungarian extreme right in action.
    Individual terror is their weapon.
This is nothing new, it has been going on for a few years, but it has been hushed down in local media.
All in the nice tradition of:
‘All who are not with us, will be hunted down as dogs’.
Intimidation and not normal political work, the typical hallmarks of people who will scream ‘free speech’ and ‘democracy’ the few times they have to face the music.

    OMG
Where is freedom of religion in a EU country? This is a dictatorship a fine example of a Communist propaganda!!
    György Turi should be Sacked!!

    Advent Cross desecrated
Diabolical forces, cut down an Advent Cross, in the town of Pomáz erected by Jobbik as part of its Christmas campaign to remind people to the real meaning of the season.

  • wolfi

    @Law:
If there were real “Diabolical forces” you’d be quartered and burnt on the stake – oh no, that was what so called christians like you would do in the good old times…
Must be terrible for goons like you that other people have their own opinions and rights -
not everybody wants a jobbik symbol, cross or whatever on public display, get it ?

  • Zoltan

Forgive me if I’m wrong – it’s been a long time since Sunday school – but aren’t candles the correct symbols to display for Advent, with crosses being primarily identified with Christ’s crucifixion, i.e. Easter?

  • C’est Moi

Zoltan – you beat me to that exact same point by mere minutes. Law is an idiot so don’t expect him to understand the difference between crosses and crèches.

  • Law

Ohh Dear we forget who are Killing Innocent Palestinian Families in palestine!! Not everybody wants to see Jewish Rabbis walking around in Black and white or Jewish Festivals in Hungary but there still allowed by law, so why not Christian traditions? Even when majority are Christian in Hungary so again the tail is wagging the Dog.
    Wolfi the Half wit!

Posting of phone numbers of people one does not agree with is typical of Jewish extremists. The list of Jewish peace activists with their photos and phone numbers posted on the Internet by extremist Jews is atypical example. It is a despicable thing to do. This and some other information about kurucinfo indicates that it may not be what it claims to be and instead of being a radical pro-Hungarian site it may well be a Jewish/Communist financed site designed to discredit genuine national movements.
Major György Turi’s phone number should be public indicating that kurucinfo publishing it does not provide any information that is not already available to the public, providing additional proof that kurucinfo is a front maintained by Jewish extremists.

viking :) according to you fear campaign and threats are the sole right of the leftists, then. just wanted to understand where you were coming from. up until a while ago hungary was known as “maria orszaga” – that would the the virgin mary in case you’ll get confused.
this tolerance sh@t that is being preached allows every beast and fowl to practice their religion in public but suddenly these famous tolerance preaching personas refuse to give equal time to the cross? how does that work out for tolerance if i may ask without being called an antisemite or worse?

Eehh, where did I claim that *any* should have the ‘right’ to indulge in ‘fear campaign and threats’?
Please point to that statement of mine.

I think I need some explanation to understand the rest of your post, but just remember that if you are a ‘Real Hungarian’ you are hardly a Christian.
‘Real Hungarians’ like Koppany died resisting the Christian influence in Hungary, before you became the puppets of the Vatican
    -
We live in a secular world, displaying religious symbols, whether they are Christian, Muslim, Jewish or Law’s ‘confused mix of everything’, to push political agendas is normally never seen as acceptable.
Let people worship what they want in peace, also the religion of no-religion.
    -
This thread is though not about religion – it is about how the extreme-right (Tim’s and Bob’s best friends) harass political opponents, with the silent and under-cover support of Jobbik, with all their Tim and Bob.

Re: “Here we see the Hungarian extreme right in action.”
You ain’t kidding – No matter what the topic is, Roma Crime, Jewish Conspiracy and Communism.” are dragged in. Guaranteed. Even promoting the swine flu shot was some kind of conspiracy to kill people (Jaj!!!)
What is the profile of the average poster around here?
They speak fluent English – It seems they grew up in English speaking countries and may now live in Hungary or have Hungarian backgrounds and live in English speaking countries. Is that accurate?
I believe you and Wolfi are in Hungary because you have Hungarian families – do you speak fluent Hungarian ? Do you understand Hungarian newspapers and the news on TV? (I don’t) I know Vandorlo does. Not sure why you would expose yourself to so much garbage – I wouldn’t if I were fluent in Hungarian.
Please assure me that the Conspiracy nuts, Roma/Jew/Communist/ whatever haters here do not represent the average Hungarian
I could not understand how the Cross, Christianity
which represent Christ can be used to incite hatred against minorities since that would be diametrically opposed to everything Christ stood for and stands for. But then again, I did not realize I was living in a Communist country for 13 years (Canadian Liberal party was in power for 13 years until 2006)
So if I accept the JOBBIK definition of Christianity, I can follow the thought process to Communist Canada.
Quite an education for me since September.

    @Olga:
My knöwledge of the Hungarian language is rather rudimentary – I know a lot of words, but the Grammar, which is completely different from English/German etc makes it difficult for me to read political articles in newspapers for example – and I don’t want to read something like “Blikk”.
That’s why I am on this site, to learn more about Hungarian businesses and politics – I don’t want to pester my wife all the time, and she is definitely not too intereted in politics after having worked in a town’s office for many years in the socialist times…

Your reasons for being on this website are the same as mine.
    Here is a joke I rec’d today.
It’s “Canadian Politics” but substitute the name
“Harper” with any Western leader – no one is
happy with their gov’t these days
    Have a good weekend
Joe and Jack saw an ad in the Kentville Advertiser in Nova Scotia and bought a mule for $100.
The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day.
The next morning the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry, fellers, I have some bad news, the mule died last night.”
Joe and Jack replied, “Well, then just give us our money back.”
The farmer said, “Can’t do that. I went and spent it already.”
They said, “OK then, just bring us the dead mule.”
The farmer asked, “What in the world ya’ll gonna do with a dead mule?”
Joe said, “We gonna raffle him off.”
The farmer said, “You can’t raffle off a dead mule!”
Jack said, “We shore can! Heck, we don’t hafta tell nobody he’s dead”.
A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Joe and Jack at the Co-Op grocery store and asked:
“What’d you fellers ever do with that dead mule?”
They said,”We raffled him off like we said we wuz gonna do.”
Jack said, : Shucks, we sold 500 tickets fer two dollars a piece and made a profit of $898.”
The farmer said,”My Lord, didn’t anyone complain?”
Joe said, “Well, the feller who won got upset. So we gave him his two dollars back.”
Joe and Jack now work for the government.
They’re overseeing the Harper’s Economic Stimulus package. (Harper is our Conservative PM)

Religious freedom to erect crosses is one thing,
but apart from the fact that the cross is not a
traditional Advent symbol, Jobbik’s erection of
the double-cross is quite clearly for political
    reasons.
To quote Jobbik themselves – “…our cross
errection campaign has fulfilled a patriotic duty:
the double cross emblem simultaneously also
represents our national symbol which similar to
the Turul statue and the Arpad flag has come under
    attack from the liberal-left media.”
    http://www.jobbik.com/hungary-news/3044.html
But then again, aren’t extremists on all sides the
first to proclaim patriotism and adapt existing
symbolism and imagery to their own needs?
I have no problem with religious symbolism of all
kinds but I find quite offensive these double-
crosses, because they are erected for political
    reasons.
