Not so long ago I wrote that the Democratic Forum may be the surprise performer in next year’s elections. I’m no longer as convinced of that. Last week, the Democratic Forum announced that the journalist and author József Debreczeni (pictured with former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány at a book publication event) would feature on its campaign list next year. While Debreczeni’s anti-Orbán credentials are unquestionable and this may bring in more anti-Orbán votes for the party, Debreczeni has been too cozy to Gyurcsány in the past (the above image was the first result via a Google Image Search) and apparently Debreczeni is still on very good terms with the former prime minister. Magyar Nemzet reports that neighbors have seen Debreczeni coming and going from Gyurcsány’s house, thus suggesting the two are still in touch on a regular basis. This very well be too much for Democratic Forum voters, who can’t be said to be fans of Gyurcsány either, and it may very well backfire for the party.
