EU approves outline for trio presidency including Hungary

The General Affairs Council of the European Union has approved the programme for the Spanish-Belgian-Hungarian presidency in 2010-11, the Foreign Ministry told MTI on Thursday.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Balazs said at the council session that the trio will start its activities as the Lisbon Treaty comes into effect. The treaty will change institutional EU structures and the three countries will use released capacities for the advancement of affairs directly impacting the lives of European citizens, he added.

During the Hungarian presidency from January through June 2011, preparations for the next EU budget will start, the EU’s Danube strategy is expected to be approved and Romania and Bulgaria are expected to join the EU’s Schengen border system.

Balazs expressed hope that a summit to be attended by countries of the EU and the Eastern Partnership (Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia) will be held during Hungary’s presidency.
