Hungary’s main opposition Fidesz party still has a commanding lead over the rival ruling Socialists but the gap between the two frontrunners has narrowed slightly, a poll by Ipsos published in Thursday’s Nepszabadsag said.
In the whole voter sample, Fidesz’s lead over the Socialists was 35 to 14 percent in early December – the highest support for the Socialists since the spring. Fidesz stabilised its backing over the past half a year.
The radical nationalist Jobbik was backed by 6 percent of the voting population.
Among voters with clear preference, Fidesz has a 63 to 21 percent lead over the Socialists, somewhat narrower than the 65 to 17 percent gap registered in October. Jobbik recorded 10 percent support in this category.
Were the elections held next Sunday, none of the other parties would clear the 5 percent threshold of parliamentary representation. The conservative Democratic Forum, the liberal Free Democrats and the green LMP are standing at 1 percent each.
The poll was conducted from December 1 to 7 on a sample of 1,500 adults.
