Mesterházy officially chosen as Socialists’ candidate for PM

The Socialist Party convention elected caucus leader Attila Mesterházy as the party’s prime ministerial candidate with a 90% majority, and the party national list with a 70% majority on Saturday.

“The Socialist Party is preparing for a frank, intense and proud campaign,” Mesterházy said in his acceptance speech.

Mesterházy added that he wants to increase the influence of the state, “which must play a major part in health care, education and job creation”. He warned that Hungary’s democratic traditions are at stake; “the Socialist Party can do one thing, lift up its head, straighten up, and demonstrate that it wants to win.”

Referring to Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán, party chairwoman Ildikó Lendvai said Mesterházy “faces a tough job” as he will have to fight “the man of the past, the political veteran”, but added that his job will not be that difficult “as the future always defeats the past, and a team is stronger than an individual.” The decision to choose Mesterházy “shows that there is a future for the Hungarian left-wing,” she added.

Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai said in a speech that the best way he can help the Socialists’ campaign is by working hard and governing well “without relenting for a moment. The crisis will persist until more jobs are actually created,” he said.

“There are no skeletons; we have put the closets in order, the country’s finances have been audited; let others search for skeletons at the Museum of Natural Sciences,” Bajnai quipped.

In February 2006, 517 of the 519 Socialist delegates elected then prime ministerial candidate Ferenc Gyurcsány, while the convention approved the national list with 486 votes.

Viktor Szigetvári has meanwhile been appointed as the party’s campaign chief for next year’s national elections.

“he wants to increase the influence of the state”.
That about sums it up for the socialists. Forever
    meddling in peoples’ business.

It was not easy for those old Communists to find one whose hands are not bloody. At least Mesterházy is only a corrupt opportunist and nothing more. Looking at most of the Communist MSZP/SZDSZ leaders, that is better than nothing.
Mesterházy first tried to get a job with Fidesz and went to the Communists only after they turned him down. Is that a plus or minus for Mesterházy?

There was a serious attack in downtown
Salgótarján, on Monday evening. A man with a
samurai sword attacked a couple in front of a
grocery store. According to witnesses, he chopped
off the woman’s hand and cut the man on the head.
After the initial attack the woman collapsed and
her boyfriend run into the grocery store to seek
protection; the attacker went after him and cut
him several times injuring on the skull. The
attacker then escaped from the scene.
As usual, the liberal mainstream media keeps quiet
about the incident and the police are tight-lipped
    about the crime.
Several months ago, when police arrested a suspect
accusing him of murdering a gypsy woman, police
spokesman started his press conference by telling
the press that the suspect was not a gypsy. When
police and the complicit mainstream media becomes
suddenly uncommunicative about a criminal offence,
you know who the culprits are.

According to index.hu, contrary to previous
reports, the female victim’s head was virtually
bisected with the sword and died on the scene. The
man that ran into the grocery store for protection
was savagely attacked by chopping off his hand at
the wrist area; also, several fingers of his other
hand was cut off, in addition to the cuts, he
suffered on the skull. Neither the store’s
salespeople nor the customers have been hurt.
It turned out that the female victim was the
attacker’s former girlfriend and the murder seems
    to be motivated by revenge.
The attacker was captured soon after the incident.
According to latest reports the male victim of the
incident, too, died in hospital. Hungarian

According to that Hungarian Ambiance article, “As usual, the liberal mainstream media keeps quiet about the incident and the police are tight-lipped about the crime.” Umm, then why does it list index.hu and MTI as sources of information? It even includes Magyar Nemzet, which while not liberal, is certainly mainstream.
