The governing Socialists must embrace the past eight years, including the mistakes made, but also recognising the achievements, Prime Minister candidate of the party, Attila Mesterhazy told daily Nepszabadsag in an interview published on Monday.
Mesterhazy told daily Nepszava, published on the same day, that during the election campaign, the party will point out its political rival’s lies and conjuring tricks.
Bitter fighting and bickering must be avoided in politics, Mesterhazy told Nepszabadsag. The Socialists do have some responsibility in the strengthening of the radical nationalist Jobbik party because Jobbik identified some social problems that the Socialists have been unable to resolve. However, the solutions that Jobbik offers are extremely bad, often based on fascists and Neo-Nazi ideologies, he added.
Mesterhazy said the issue of granting dual citizenship to ethnic Hungarians living beyond the borders needs to be examined after the elections. It must be made clear that this is an issue of symbolic importance and needs to be harmonised with the interests of the Hungarian society, he added.
Mesterhazy told Nepszava that he was certain that after the elections, the Socialists would be in a position to contribute to shaping Hungary after the crisis.
Conservative opposition party Fidesz is widely expected to win the general elections next spring on the basis of current polling figures.
