Since just about everything Hungary's Socialist Party has touched over the previous few years has gone pear-shaped, the Socialists tried to position themselves as "the" party opposed to racism. Traditionally one of the ways this has been achieved in other countries was by promoting minorities within a party or administration to prominent positions. The Socialists, however, are slow to grasp this concept, a report at index.hu reveals. Roma Affairs State Secretary László Teleki, the most prominent Socialist of Roma background, found himself at the 63rd spot on the party's national list for next year's election campaign. When someone pointed out that placing the only Roma MP candidate so low on the list would make their claims of anti-racism ring hollow, the party's national commission sprung into action, bumping him up to the 56th spot.
