Women remain window dressing in Hungary’s largest political parties

kirakatban.jpgAlthough 8 of the 22 MEPs sent to Strasbourg by Hungary were women, in local politics the ratio is far lower, origo.hu reports. In the case of the Socialist Party, a quota exists whereby 1 in every 5 nominees on a list needs to be a woman, but among the first 75 spots, only 6 are occupied by women. Most women were placed on the list from the 90th position onward, meaning their chances of making it into parliament are effectively null, and suggests that like multiculturalism, the Socialists aren’t the party of gender equality either.

At rival party Fidesz, only 10 spots out of 176 were given to women, and party vice chairwoman Ildikó Pelczné Gál won’t even run in an individual campaign. Fidesz parliamentary faction leader Tibor Navracsics told the portal that he believes the reason there were so few women running individually as opposed to on party lists was because campaigns were more of a “manly sport”, before adding that he hoped more women would be on the lists in the future. Not with attitudes like that.

    Maybe he means that most campaigns are non-stop cavalcades of tiresome drivel, where nothing really matters except cheap political point-scoring. Most women, and indeed most intelligent men, are somewhat turned off by such a prospect…

    In the farm belt? With the clucking hens and hissing geese.. and that’s only the politicians.
    BTW. Nobody in my town knows who represents them. They don’t know who the mayor is, who Jesus Christ or what praying is..How can they be saved -
    from the eternal grave? (The Who, Pete Townshend).
    Women are better off in the kitchen with the pots and pans. Right away from the nasty shenanigans in Hungarian Politics. That is, if you are not the coffin dodger, Hilda Lendvai or, “do I smell nice?” Violet David.
    They are coming to take me away -I know!

    Perhaps women simply have more sense than to join the cluster f#%@ that is known as Hungarian politics.
