Attila Mesterhazy, who was elected as the Socialist Party’s prime-minister candidate at the weekend, will take over the running of the election committee from party leader Ildiko Lendvai, the Socialists’ spokesman told MTI on Tuesday.
Mesterhazy, 35, will organise an intensive, honest and energetic campaign, said Istvan Nyako, who added that the decision to put the PM candidate at the helm of the campaign signalled that the party was falling behind Mesterhazy, who was expected to unite and energise the party.
Mesterhazy secured the backing of 90 percent of congress delegates at the weekend.
Lendvai told the congress that their decision meant that the left wing now had a future.
Earlier this month Mesterhazy told MTI that the Socialists would make realistic promises in their campaign, and they would seek to find solutions to the everyday problems of ordinary people. He said that it was possible that populism secured votes faster, but it was also possible to engage in constructive politics, and doing so would pay dividends.
Conservative opposition party Fidesz is widely expected to win the general election next spring on the basis of current polling figures.
