Democratic Forum prime ministerial candidate Lajos Bokros has challenged Jobbik leader Gábor Vona to a public debate. Vona has rejected the invitation.
In a letter to Vona, Bokros asked for 90 minutes to prove that Jobbik’s policies will destroy and betray Hungary. “Your ideas and program points – if implemented – would drive Hungarians into poverty and serfdom,” Bokros wrote.
Jobbik is against the nation and society when it says that the IMF loan need not be repaid after it saved Hungary from state bankruptcy, Bokros said.
In rejecting the invitation, Vona said: “The neo-liberal social and economic policy which you represent” is harmful to the nation and society, as “it is prepared to sacrifice people, communities, cultures and values – in other words, everything – on the altar of big capital and multinational companies”.
Vona said he considers Fidesz leader Viktor Orbán and Socialist prime ministerial candidate Attila Mesterházy as his real opponents, but is ready to face Bokros at a candidates’ debate in the spring.
In response, Bokros said Vona is running away and is stalling for time, but his invitation to debate still stands.
Interviewed by Magyar Hírlap, Vona said he will face Bokros in a debate only if the Forum can collect nomination slips by legal means. He recalled that the election commission excluded the Forum from the by-election in the Ninth District last January over this issue.

Huh, I thought Hungary was already there. Apparently not…sorry, my mistake.
It would be better if these two clowns, Gábor Vona and Lajos Bokros submitted their own plans for social and economic reform so we can all get in on the argument. If we had something writ in stone
maybe we could get some idea of what these jokers are really about?
The bickering and cajoling that goes on among politicians is reminiscent of the kindergarten.
“Disgusted” from Debrecen.
@KovácsMiss: Bokros has on many occasions detailed his plans and priorities. In January he wrote a lengthy article in ‘Élet és Irodalom’ entitled “A reform kritikus tömege.” http://www.es.hu/index.php?view=doc;21945
This is somewhat out of date now, but very little (in fact, next to nothing) of the substance of the reforms he suggested has been implemented and is still germane.
All we need now is something from Vona.

A reformok kritikus tömege.
Thank you Vándorló for the information. It is appreciated.
It is not only the MSZP government that has been found wanting in these desperate economic days. All the politicians (with few exceptions) have been outed as useless corrupt and inefficient self-seekers.
No sensible reforms (even those suggested by Bokros)will (or can) take place until we find more enlightened individuals putting themselves
up for election.
Gábor Vona and his lot appeal to a particular clientele – as you well know. Still, it make a change from reading about the MSZP and Fidesz all the time.
